Improve your child’s financial literacy for FREE this month
April is financial literacy month, so the education Web site BrainPOP is offering free access to its Spotlight: Financial Literacy.
The site is perfect for elementary school children. Short videos included on the site are animated and engaging. Some of the subjects covered are quite timely: taxes (!), the stock market (!!), banking (!!!) and mortgages (!!!!). Other topics covered include comparing prices, calculating interest, credit cards and supply and demand.
There’s even a quiz to test your child’s knowledge of mortgages. Here’s a sample question: What incentive do banks have for loaning money to homebuyers?
This is a great way to introduce kids to the need for fiscal responsibility. It’ll make for some great dinner table talk. Enjoy.

Comment by Melissa on 19 May 2009:
Every day thousands of corporate dollars are spent on advertising that teaches children (and adults) how to spend money, but not how to make and manage it.
I think is important to start teaching children the value of money from a young age.
Thanks smart mum for your tips!
