What it takes to make it into a University of California school

What does it take to get into a UC school? In a word - plenty.

High school seniors and their parents are learning firsthand that getting into one of the nine campuses in the University of California system takes hard work, an outstanding grade point average and equally impressive scores on the SAT or ACT. This is particularly true for Berkeley and UCLA.

Here are some fascinating numbers on admissions for the fall of 2009 from the UC system’s admissions office.

  • The first list includes this information for each campus: the average GPA and average test scores. The percentage of applicants accepted who took 15 or more honors-level courses during the 10th through the 12th grades is drawn from 2008 data.
  • The second list includes: the percentage of applicants who received admittance letters. The additional information on GPAs is drawn from 2008 data.
  • An applicant’s GPA is based on grades from the “a-g” requirements taken during the 10th and 11th grade, including up to eight honors courses. (Honors course grades are calculated on a 5.0 scale.) Average exam scores are based on students’ highest official reported scores.

    2. Wow, Ruth. This is a wealth of information! Thank you so much for pulling this together. I now can see the importance of taking honors classes if you want to get into the UC system.

    3. Thank you so much. Keep in mind that these are just “stats” and the UC system does take into account some students with “special” skills or those that achieved a 3.5 and an average SAT but overall is someone that they want at the university. My own son, graduated 2005 with a 3.65 decent SAT and ACT - and got into Berkeley. WE WERE SHOCKED. It was clear to us that there was a holistic look at the application as well as the numbers. Ruth, this gives me hope for #3 son who is a junior. THANK YOU SO THIS GREAT BLOG!!!

    4. Thanks for the post! Something else that should be taken into consideration is the SAT II subject tests. Applicants to UC schools will have to take two of them.

A-G courses are important and planning correctly for their senior year is important as well. “Senioritis” creeps up around their peers and even if they do get accepted in the school, they’ll have to maintain a good GPA.

My little sister is aiming for UCSD (where I graduated) and I’ve learned more about the application process than I care to know. lol.

      Cool blog!
