Quick Tip: Create a college application portfolio to stay organized

OK, high school students and the parents who love them so: Do you want to avoid that last-minute scramble for information to include on your college application? Of course you do!

Melissa Janak, who manages the middle and high school counseling program in the San Diego Unified School District offers this great tip: Keep a portfolio of any and all information you might want to include - awards, commendations, community service hours, letters of recommendation.

“When you sit down to do your application, you want to have that handy,” Janak said. “You don’t want to have to go searching for it.”

Here are more ideas for what to include:

  • Test scores for the PSAT, SAT, ACT and subject tests.
  • Report cards
  • Documentation of extracurricular achievements that set you apart from the pack. Save the program from the play you starred in or the program from the banquet when you were named MVP for your sports team. Did you win a blue ribbon in an art competition? Save it.
  • Information for internships you have completed. Write a brief overview of what you did and when. Ask your mentor to write a letter of recommendation at the end of your time together.
  • If you were a stand out in middle school - perhaps you won an impressive science fair competition - include that, too.
